How Salesforce CPQ Pricing Works

The short answer: Salesforce CPQ prices a quote in layers. Price books set the starting price, a pricing method on each product decides how that price is calculated, discount schedules and contracted prices adjust it, and price rules apply custom logic. Approval rules then review anything outside your discount limits. Because CPQ is end of sale, Salesforce no longer sells new licenses, so questions about the cost of CPQ now come mostly from existing customers at renewal.

People search for CPQ pricing for two reasons. Some want to understand how the product calculates a price. Others want to know what it costs. This guide covers both, starting with how the calculation works.

The layers of CPQ pricing

  1. Price books. Each product has a list price in a price book, and different price books can serve different regions, currencies, or customer groups.
  2. Pricing method. Each product has a pricing method that tells CPQ how to calculate the price from the list price and quantity. The standard options are list, cost, percent of total, block, and custom.
  3. Discount schedules. Quantity-based discounts apply automatically as volume grows.
  4. Contracted prices. Customer-specific prices from an agreement override the standard price for that account.
  5. Price rules. Conditions and actions adjust prices or fields based on the quote, the products, or the customer.
  6. Approvals. Quotes outside your discount thresholds route to the right approver before they go to the customer.

Pricing methods

  • List. The price comes straight from the price book entry, multiplied by quantity.
  • Cost. The price is built from the product’s cost plus a markup.
  • Percent of total. The price is a percentage of other lines on the quote, which suits items such as support or maintenance.
  • Block. The price is set by quantity range, so a block of units has a fixed price.
  • Custom. Used when none of the above fits and the logic is built into the setup.

Discount schedules

A discount schedule gives automatic discounts based on quantity. Salesforce offers two types. A range schedule applies one discount to every unit based on the total quantity. A slab schedule applies each discount only to the units that fall inside its tier. The difference is large on big quantities, so choose the type deliberately and test it with real quotes.

Price rules

Price rules let you adjust prices or other quote fields when conditions are met, for example applying a regional uplift or a partner discount. They are powerful, and they are also where complexity builds up. Every rule that exists only because of an old deal is something you will have to review in any later project.

What does Salesforce CPQ cost?

Salesforce stopped selling CPQ to new customers in March 2025, so it no longer lists CPQ for new purchase. Existing customers should check their contract and renewal quote for current terms. If you are comparing options for a new project, start with what is Salesforce Revenue Cloud.

If you are planning a move to Revenue Cloud

CPQ pricing logic does not copy across. Revenue Cloud uses a different pricing design, so price rules, discount schedules, and custom calculations are rebuilt. A pricing review before the project tells you which rules you still need. Our migration guide explains why the move is a rebuild, and what is Salesforce CPQ covers the basics of the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Salesforce CPQ calculate a price?

It starts with the list price in the price book, applies the product’s pricing method, then applies discount schedules, contracted prices, and price rules. Approval rules review the result if it falls outside your limits.

What is block pricing in Salesforce CPQ?

Block pricing sets the price by quantity range, so a block of units has a fixed price instead of a per-unit price.

What is the difference between a range and a slab discount schedule?

A range schedule applies one discount to all units based on the total quantity. A slab schedule applies each discount only to the units within its tier.

Can new customers buy Salesforce CPQ?

No. Salesforce stopped selling CPQ to new customers in March 2025. Existing customers can continue to use and renew it.

What happens to CPQ pricing rules if we move to Revenue Cloud?

They are rebuilt, not copied, because Revenue Cloud uses a different pricing design. A review before the project helps you decide which rules to carry forward.
