What is Salesforce Lightning?Launched in the Salesforce Winter ’16 Release, the Salesforce Lightning Experience is an evolution of the entire Salesforce platform with user productivity and in-line intelligence at its heart. Compared to Salesforce Classic the new Lightning Experience is designed with a unified mobile experience in mind.
From a clean home screen that consolidates frequently used functionality such as visibility into your quarterly performance to goals, to the new drag and drop record editing of the Kanban view, Lightning feels more akin to a sleek new iPad app than an enterprise CRM.
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH NOISE ABOUT MIGRATING TO LIGHTNING?
When it was first announced almost three years ago in Welcome to the Future of CRM. Welcome to Salesforce Lightning Salesforce had already put a significant amount of effort into the creation of this revolutionary user interface. However, as many existing customers found, while the majority of core Classic Salesforce functionality had worked in the new Lightning Experience, much less used, but still substantial, functionality did not.
The practical impact of this was if you were new to Salesforce it was easy to embrace Salesforce Lightning as that was all that you ever knew. If you were an existing customer, especially one with a well developed and complex instance, there was an excellent chance you would be utilizing functionality in Classic that was not yet available in Lightning.
Over the past three years, Salesforce Lightning Experience has undergone a significant amount of additional development and improvement. While built by Salesforce as the home for all future innovation, it has taken time for the migration of legacy Classic features to catch up. That process of Classic feature migration is now almost complete.
SO WHERE DO WE STAND?
The list of Salesforce Classic features unavailable in Lightning has dwindled, while the functionality available only in the Lightning Experience has continued to grow. While there is still the potential for some initial discomfort for organizations that make the switch. For the majority of Salesforce customers the value achieved by moving to Lightning now far outways the cost of doing so.
HOW DO WE MIGRATE TO LIGHTNING
With the help of Salesforce provided training such as Trailhead and the increased experience of consulting practices such as CloudMasonry it has never been easier for Salesforce Classic customers to make the migration to the Salesforce Lightning Experience.
